Cancer fatigue is a form of exhaustion that is commonly caused by several factors like treatment, the disease itself, medication, stress, and more. It may not get better even if you’re resting often and getting enough sleep.

Signs and Symptoms

Since cancer fatigue is different than normal tiredness, it’s important to recognize the symptoms so you can discuss them with your doctor at your next appointment. Here are some things to look out for:

  • A sense of tiredness that makes your whole body feel heavy
  • Feeling tired even after resting or sleep
  • Feeling too tired to do the things you normally do
  • Experiencing weakness and lack of energy
  • Experiencing difficulty concentrating or focusing

Coping With Cancer Fatigue

Cancer fatigue may be extremely frustrating and can have a big impact on your quality of life. Share your symptoms with your doctor so they can help you manage your fatigue. Below are some tips to help you cope with cancer fatigue:

  • Make sure your doctor is aware that you’re experiencing cancer fatigue, as he or she may have recommendations specific to your needs
  • Exercise regularly, as approved by your doctor
  • Try eating healthy foods and drink plenty of fluids
  • Plan important activities for the times when you feel your best and have the most energy
  • Try taking naps throughout the day
  • Ask for help with tasks
