Various treatments and the disease itself can make living with cancer painful. It’s possible to experience different kinds of pain at the same time, and your doctor may be able to suggest some helpful remedies.

Talking to Your Doctor

It’s helpful to have a conversation with your doctor when you’re experiencing pain, as he or she may be able to suggest some forms of relief. If you take a pain medication, you may also find it helpful to keep a journal to record how well your pain medication is working, if there are any side effects, and how it has impacted your emotions.

Pain Relief Options

There are a number of pain relief options, both prescription and over-the-counter. It’s a good idea to discuss your pain management plan with your doctor, as he or she will know what care is best for you. Here are a few ways your doctor may recommend to treat your pain:

Opioids require a prescription and are the strongest pain relievers available. People living with cancer are sometimes hesitant to take them because of a fear of becoming addicted. If you have any concerns about managing your pain with opioids, your doctor is the best person to talk to.

In addition to the above remedies, there are some other more holistic techniques to help with pain management such as yoga, acupuncture, and massage. These alternative treatments can help increase blood flow and ease tightness of sore, stiff joints. Talk to your doctor to discuss pain relief options that are best for you.
